Went in for a light dinner and ordered a few plates of starters. It was around 9pm and the restaurant was buzzing and still slightly busy - the experience was quite enjoyable.
We asked for recommendations, to be honest, the waiter’s recommendation of the Chettinadu Chicken Bites starters was pretty mediocre as it was over cooked and slightly dry.
We decided on the hot butter squid which was really really good, easily a 10 out of 10 and the mutton rolls + Lankan ketchup was decent.
Drinks were nice and refreshing.
I wasn’t too happy about the mandatory service charge since the service was okay but not brilliant and also this is the UK.
Always such good value for the food. There are specific dishes offered at the Kings Cross Hoppers that aren’t offered elsewhere. Unsure if that’s the same for all Hopper locations.
Highly recommend the bone marrow roti if you’re not vegetarian. Definitely get the hoppers (obviously 😉) and the dosa with some saucy dishes. If you don’t tolerate spice well this might not be a place for you. Good vegetarian and meat options.
I personally wouldn't come back mainly because all dishes are somewhat spicy, with no option for non spicy in any of them.
That said, I did enjoy the squid as a starter and having the lamb as a main.
My colleagues who like it really hot, complained the food wasn't hot enough.
So, if you like spicy, make sure you ask for proper hot. If you don't like spicy, think twice before coming as there won't be options.
Good portions for sharing though, staff was professional and attentive, and service was quick 👌
Had an amazing dinner at the Hoppers yesterday. First time trying Sri Lankan food and loved it, we had no idea what to expect but everything tasted so good. For starters we had the devilled paneer which was nice and really spicy! Lamb kothu roti was also really good. We then had the chicken kari for mains, we've ordered a hopper, a dosa to go with the curry to see the difference, the dosa was massive, and they were all lovely! We also had the green mango cooler which was so refreshing! We saw other people order the lamb shank and it looked so nice but we were too full to fit any more food in, so next time we will give this a try!
Amazing food! We were lucky to get in early Saturday evening, even though we’d not booked we were offered one of the high bar tables. …
We 'hopped' from plate to plate, but only a few stood out.
We came with a group of eight for an evening dinner. The restaurant has ambient lighting, is spacious and quite lively. It can get quite loud as it’s in the heart of Kings Cross, right beside many company offices.
The menu is minimal and they even give you a guide on how you should order based on your party size. It's tapas style so I'd recommend ordering several dishes to share. There aren't as many options for the mains. As we were a large group, we ordered a dozen, but only a few stood out.
For starters, we ordered the paneer, hot butter squid, mutton rolls, chicken bites, and lamb kothi roti. Of all of them, the hot butter squid was the best. It was crispy, moist, very flavorful. It contrasted very well with the green chilies and onions. The mutton rolls were the next best and the portion size was generous. The rest of the starters were average and not worth ordering.
The options for mains are limited. Initially, we wanted to order the lamb shank biryani but unfortunately it was out of stock. We ended up ordering the prawn, chicken and lamb karis. They all disappointed. All of these curries lacked depth in flavor and were quite watery. As a South Asian, I'm quite particular about curries being cooked longer to allow the spices to properly marinate and let the flavours come through. This was not the case here.
For drinks, I initially ordered the masala buttermilk. It was very similar in taste to the famous Turkish ayran drink but with a strong hint of ginger. Personally, I wasn't a fan, but kudos to the waiter who was kind enough to replace it for free with the wattalapam lassi. I enjoyed this drink. It was rich in coconut with a thicker texture and actually proved to be quite filling. It processed in my stomach like a dessert.
For desserts, we ordered the chocolate biskut and wattalapam puddings. The chocolate pudding was rich and dense but very good. I'd recommend sharing this with one, if not two other people, and having this with some kind of hot drink. The wattalapam pudding I think had a better flavor combination (cardamom spice and coconut). However, the texture of the pudding itself was similar to a dense custard. I think this would be a showstopper as a milk cake instead.
Overall, we were quite pleased with a few specific dishes. It was very busy and the service was as good as it could be, considering it's a packed restaurant in a prime location.
I think prices are decent, but expect to spend a bit more due to the smaller portions.
Delicious food. We had a variety of dishes to try and share. Lots of pescatarian and vegetarian options available. Friendly snd efficient service. A nice spot for a quick lunch. Suitable for big groups as large tables available. Atmosphere is utilitarian and convenient. Would go back.
I recently visited for my birthday.
The watermelon margarita cocktail was weak and didn’t taste great. …
